Howlite was first discovered in Nova Scotia. It can be found in several countries, some of those being the United States, Canada, Newfoundland, Russia, Germany, Mexico and quite a few others. Howlite is a widely abundant stone. This stone is a very porous. It has been used in fashion jewelry for years as it is easily dyed and has often times been dyed blue to resemble turquoise. If you work with any kind of paint, especially oil paint, do not wear a porous ring while painting as it will absorb the paint and turpentine and change the color of the stone. It is a best practice to take off all jewelry when working with paint and other chemicals in order to keep the stone in good condition.
